I’ve been wondering why we listen to music.
When in my own room, I listen to music to find new artists and songs, and find things to share on this newsletter, or create a certain mood, or because I’m feeling a certain way, or as a form of escapism, or sometimes, just because it’s more fun than folding laundry in silence.
I go to shows for sometimes the same reasons, but what’s different about watching music happen in front of me is that it requires much more focus AND there’s so much more to observe at a live show. It feels like a behind the scenes to the recording.
Last night, I had the chance to check out SALES after mentioning their tour a few weeks ago. I had no idea what the dynamics of the three band members would be like, or the part that percussion pads played in creating their sound.
I first heard their song Getting It On three years ago and it was one of my favorite songs for a while. I understood the song, and the song understood me. Three years later though — I still love the song — but it speaks to me a bit differently: more as a beloved memory of yesterday.
Three years later, what remains interesting about this band is the unique voice of Lauren Morgan, the lead singer, and their characteristic lo-fi beat. All of this culminates in:
