Okay, I'll be honest
The reasons I started this newsletter are mostly selfish:
I used to listen to a ton of music at work, but my new job doesn't really allow me to do that. Drastically decreasing my average listening hours per week sucks because, like many of you, music gives me life. Working on a weekly music newsletter is a forcing function for guaranteeing at least a certain number of hours per week of *intentionally* listening to music. By intentionally listening, I mean I just sit there completely focused on listening and not trying to multitask.
Discovering music is immensely enjoyable. Again, by writing a weekly newsletter focused on indie/less-heard music, forcing function yada yada. . .
Lastly -- and hopefully this is the unselfish bit -- I want to encourage people to experience music for themselves. To stumble into a half-full bar they've never stepped inside of, and be open to all the talents that can be found in the quietest of corners.
That said, this week I stumbled into a comfortably full Bottom of the Hill to check out a band (featured below) whose songs I'd heard only two of, and only once each. Shoutout to my friend Steve for suggesting we check out a show on a Wednesday night, because it was a pretty lit Wednesday night in the history of Wednesday nights.
So, this week I have one song suggestion and two show suggestions.
Used To You by Foreign Air
This is a really fun band to see live. Fun fact: the chorus of the song is a sample from Mason Ramsey, and if you don’t know who that is, go to your search bar and type in “walmart yodeling kid“.
