Part 2 of 3 of SXSW 2019 (Part 1 here)
While musicians from all corners of the world converge at SXSW, each bringing their own voices to add to the musical mosaic that is the festival, I wanted to focus my attention this week on the local voices.
After all is sang and done, the musicians that call the city home will still be there. And, when it comes to describing the sound of Austin music, it's difficult. It's so richly diverse. It's not any one blend of genres, but several evolutions of artistry brought forth by being a mecca of live music that attracts certain tribes of musicians.
That said, does there exist a sound of Austin that threads these diverse bands together?
Too Low To Get High by Kalu and The Electric Joint
Described as psychedelic soul
I'd add: "cross-genre world-infused rock" and "crooning souls and guitars that know what they're doing"
Tunnels by Night Glitter
Described as dreamy synth pop
I'd add: "retro afternoon music" and "wait I thought they were French"
ATTN Austin: they're playing at The Mohawk, arguably one of the best venues in the city!
Not in Austin? Check them out with Candace in SF at Bottom of the Hill on May 21st 😉
Discotheque by Sun June
Described as regret pop
I'd add: "slow pop" and "nostalgic lo-fi pop" and "music that's really authentic and also just plain fun"
Happy listening,
Angela
