same leaves on different trees
There’s this idea of similarity that comes with experiencing the same place throughout different points in history.
I saw a magnificent red maple tree in the city a few weeks ago that reminded me of a spectacular Japanese red maple I saw during golden hour in Nara three years ago. Had the first tree not made an impression on me, would the second one be as special?
Developing a concept of similarity between two different things means having a level of understanding of those two different things. Be it a place, a person, or a song. You carry a certain memory of a flavor you can use to enrich how you experience another thing.
When you cross the ocean, you carry the salt of the seas on your skin, even though the sun has risen and lowered many times over.
Below are songs that sounded different to me when I listened to them months and years later. Somehow more significant the second time:
Float by Luttrell
This sounded good when I first encountered it last year, but a few weeks ago I rediscovered it and then it just CLICKED about 1:30 into the song.
Madness by Lucius
Okay, this is pretty popular indie but just in case you haven’t hear of them, this is for you. In an album full of hits, I stand to make sure the gems aren’t buried.
Try to Be - Catz’n Dogz Club Edit by Blue Hawaii, Catz’N Dogz
I thought this was a semi-annoying edit of the original until I learned that the first 1:30 was intended for the DJ to mix in the song.
Happy listening,
Angela
