can I ask you a question?
Recently I came across a good friend’s playlist back to my folking roots and loved how it created a sense of homeyness and nostalgia, even though I only knew about half the songs on the playlist, and even though both of us now live half a world away from our former home.
It reminded me of my folking roots (sorry, had to). It reminded me of dewy Texas summers with live music at Zilker Park, and driving through the hill country in my Corolla with no one but me and my music (and my A/C) on blast, and the hygge of hanging around a fire pit with friends. Although my present home is ocean breezes and long drives down Highway 1, once the impression of a home has been conceived, it’s hard to forget.
More so than any other question concerning music, asking someone to define what home sounds like with a couple of songs is highly personal and thus also incredibly interesting. So that’s the question I pose to all of you this week:
what songs remind you of home?
Here are three of mine:
Reno by Wild Child
Even though I have no connection to the state of Nevada.
Switzerland by Daughter
Also have never been to Switzerland.
The Water by Johnny Flynn (feat. Laura Marling)
I discovered both of these artists on Youtube during the British nu-folk revival in my later high school years.
Happy listening,
Angela
